The making of The Feels Project. This project utilises collective perspectives to bring clarity and support to teenagers by allowing them to reflect on their experiences and emotions. We should be curious about how we feel and why, and about how others around us feel. In our mental heath epidemic, it is of great value to connect with ourselves and each other at a deeper level.

I was inspired by Ficciones Typografika, “a project dedicated to typographic exploration in a public space. Over a five year period, a modest poster board hung in a Minneapolis neighborhood became a barometer for experimental typographic practice within the global design community.”

Using thermochromic ink and heat to reveal using touch.

Scratching away to reveal underneath – paint and dishwashing liquid mixed and painted onto a taped surface.

Looking at different colour palettes, different art styles, different interactivity methods, for each emotion.

Discussing my work during the supercrit was useful and gave me some new ideas and directions to push my project.
A reminder of what my project is at this stage – exploring emotion through co-creation, something for teens to interact with to reflect on their experiences and emotions, currently little zines.
Some of the feedback I received was to look at creating moments of surprise and interaction, being spontaneous and bringing fun into the project, steering away from confrontation. Can I format it to be more engaging – like an origami chatterbox? Another point was to let knowledge and literature guide my response, ie. looking at the stages of emotions such as anger and including this process and stages in my journey. To let the form guide tone and the tone guide form. And to consider a further support system beyond what I’m currently making, is there somewhere to go from here?
What I intend to do over the break is keep pushing things and pump out as much work as possible, exploring and testing still, but coming to some more refined conclusions. I want to start actioning the feedback and create some interactive and surprising moments, and looking at stages of emotions and how I can incorporate these within my work. I also want to do some more co-creating with different narratives. By the end of the break I would like to have clearly specified what my output is, and have all the content I need and all methods tested, and everything mapped out (ideally) but this is dependent on where my project goes. I also need to get onto forming all of my work into a workbook.
What I saw at the supercrit was lots of great work being shared, tested, and discussed among lots of different combinations of people. It was an awesome opportunity to see what everyone is up to and be inspired and pushed by each other. To give and to get.
